Many groups (including the CSG) use modified kendo shinai (bamboo swords designed for the Japanese martial art of kendo) as training tools for full-contact fencing in the study of historical swordsmanship. Although somewhat lighter than a real sword, shinai are readily available through martial arts suppliers and can be combined with basic safety gear to provide a relatively safe fencing weapon.

Barking Dog Studios has designed a durable and attractive cross guard that is designed to fit a standard, size 3.9 shinai. The guard and pommel provide the shinai with a European-style hilt and helps add needed weight and balance.
